# How do I open and close a position?

Open a position by placing a buy (long) or sell (short). A market order can be placed to trade immediately at the best available price, or a limit order can be placed to specify a worst price for execution or for a resting order.

Once your trade has filled, you will hold an open, margined position.

Close your position by trading the opposite direction for the same size, or with a reduce-only, take-profit, or stop-loss order for more control and/or automatic triggering.

Perpetual positions on Arcus within the same account are automatically netted so that opposing buy/sell trades will reduce existing positions when applicable before opening a new position.
